NEW YORK (CNN) --A pharmaceutical company has agreed to pay an estimated $4.5 billion to resolve the controversy over erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, which is the only other FDA-approved medication for the disorder.
The deal was announced Friday, April 9.
The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, the world's biggest drug maker, has been seeking to extend its patents on Viagra, a widely used erectile dysfunction drug.
Viagra, sold as Levitra and Cialis, is the only other drug approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration for treating erectile dysfunction.
The deal will pay for the company's marketing and sales efforts, which have been focused on developing new medications to treat ED. The deal will not cover drugs for diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease and other diseases.
The deal was announced by Pfizer's chief executive officer, John Lechleiter, who said Pfizer was ready to take an early and bold step in its efforts to promote erectile dysfunction as a treatment for patients with heart disease and other conditions.
